How to set up a homework space for your kids

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010

Parents, summer’s over: It’s time to change your nagging ritual from “hang up your beach towel” to “clean up your desk.” Optics aside, having an organized, comfortable workspace can help your child focus better on homework. We explain how to do it.

Lighting

When Toronto-based professional organizer Clare Kumar sets up a workspace, she always includes natural, ambient and task lighting.

It’s good to place a desk near a window, Ms. Kumar says, but to minimize glare on your child’s computer screen, position the computer at a right angle to the window.

A floor lamp is a good source of ambient lighting, but most standard fluorescent bulbs don’t provide full-spectrum light, so shop around for the more expensive but better-for-your-family ones that do.

A desk lamp that can be moved around to illuminate whatever your child is working on is key (Ms. Kumar suggests a gooseneck model), but make sure it’s positioned on the opposite side of the body to the hand your child writes with “so the hand doesn’t shadow what they’re working on,” Ms. Kumar explains.

Seating

In the younger elementary-school years, a proper office chair isn’t terribly important so long as your child isn’t sitting for more than an hour.

“If you’re a more senior student and you’re sitting for three hours every night doing work, you want to pay attention to properly supporting your body so you aren’t causing any strains,” Ms. Kumar says.

Finding the right balance between height and support are key – you aren’t doing your child any favours if you give him or her one of your old hydraulic-lift manager’s chairs. To take advantage of back support in the chair, one needs to be sitting back in it, and many kids can’t without their legs dangling, Ms. Kumar explains.

“The most important thing is that the chair fits them so the back support fits them and their feet are flat on the floor,” she says. “It allows for the most ease in ability to move around.”

Location

Your kid may try to sweet-talk you into letting him or her do homework in front of the TV (“It’s just for the background noise”), but you should set up a quiet spot free from distractions.

Younger kids may prefer to be closer to their parents as they get into the homework ritual, so if you don’t want to camp in your child’s bedroom, bring him or her to you in a place such as the kitchen, Ms. Kumar suggests.

To distinguish the family eating area from your child’s homework zone, create a holder to carry homework supplies to and from the table, Ms. Kumar suggests.

“Use magazine holders to hold paperwork for the children,” she says. “You might have a portable box with all the stationary supplies.”

Tools

When we think ergonomics at the office, it’s all about mouse pads and keyboard placement, but in school, kids are still taking notes, filling out worksheets and even writing those standard five-paragraph essays by hand.

Ms. Kumar recommends hitting up a stationery or toy store for rubberized grips you can slip onto pencils or pens to make them easier to hold.

Instead of buying the sale pack of ballpoint pens, let your kid test some in the store to make sure they aren’t difficult to hold and don’t put too much strain on their hands.

“Cheapest isn’t always the best – find something that really works,” she says.

Buy your child larger notebooks, too, so they’re not reaching the bottom of the page as often and having to strain their wrists writing those final lines.

*And don’t do this … let your own home office get cluttered. “Do as I say, not as I do” doesn’t work

Personalized Cards for Special People | Personalized Stationery …

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

How can you make someone in your life feel special on a whim? You can send them personalized cards with a note letting them know how you feel about them. It will only take a few minutes of your time to write out a letter saying hello and letting someone know that you are thinking about them. You will find that something as simple as this small gesture can genuinely make someone’s entire day.

Send notes on personalized stationery to your parents, grandparents, friends, aunt’s, and anyone else that you care about. Tell them about what has been transpiring in your life and how you have been doing. Ask them to respond to your letter if you would like to continue on corresponding this way. Even though it may seem a lot easier to send off a simple email, you will make someone feel extra special when you take the time to handwrite the letter.

Instant communications such as emails or texts are a great option when you are in a rush and carrying on an informal conversation. But there are times when it is inappropriate to send an email or a text. If it is someone’s birthday, a special holiday, or if you haven’t spoken to someone in awhile then you need to take the time to write out a letter and with your stationery or note card all ready to go it will only take a few minutes of your time to write out the note.

Sympathy cards will also mean a lot more when they are personalized. Quite often people struggle when they are trying to figure out what to write inside of a sympathy card. If you have your own special personalized cards then you won’t have to say a whole lot in addition to what you select for your card.

When it comes to communicating with the special people in your life then you must go the extra mile and take the time to write them a letter. They will feel even more special if they see that you went through the trouble of having personalized note cards or stationery made and that you wrote out your note on this custom paper. Don’t send out a text or email just because it is easier, put more thought into your communications with the people that you care about and you will see improvements in all of your relationships.

Teen Girl Stabbed to Death; Arrest Made

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

(Rochester, N.Y.) – A 2-month-old baby girl will never know her parents, because they both became victims of street violence this month.

Kalynn Strozier, 16, was stabbed on Wilson St. Tuesday night.

Nyji Wynn, 27, was shot to death on North Clinton Avenue two weeks ago.

They were the parents of Honestee, who is in the care of Kalynn’s mother, Katisha Holmes.

Holmes said goodbye to her daughter at the hospital, 40 minutes before she died.

“She said, ‘Mommy I don’t want to die.’ I said, ‘Don’t worry. Stop talking and relax. We got to get you stabilized. And she said, ‘Mommy, just take care of my baby for me.’ I said, ‘I’ll do that,’” Holmes said.

There was a time when Kalynn had big dreams.

“She always come around the house and said ‘I’m going be a pediatrician.’ I would say ‘Well, if you’re going to be a pediatrician, you got to complete school and go to college,’” Holmes said.

But those dreams fell victim to the streets.

“I can remember a week ago telling her, ‘There’s nothing in the streets for you. Nothing but trouble out there. Leave it alone. Take care of your baby. You have a lot of love you can invest in her,” Holmes said.

Holmes said her daughter was loving, but strong-willed. She said Kalynn went to Wilson Street on Tuesday night knowing there would be trouble. Leah Johnson, 19, has been charged with first-degree manslaughter, accused to stabbing Kalynn. Witnesses said Kalynn and her friends were the aggressors, and would not leave when asked.

“She went in the defense of her best friend who had beef with other girls earlier in the week, in the day, and her friend basically called her over to help her fight,” Holmes said. “If she knew she was going to be murdered that night, I don’t believe she would have left home. I begged her to stay home.”

Holmes hopes Honestee grows up in a more peaceful city than the one her parents knew.

“Wake up. See what you’re doing to each other. Just wake up,” she said. “I know you may not love your brother. You may not love your sister, but somewhere in your heart, you got to find some forgiveness somewhere. Because you never know when you need that forgiveness in life.”

A fund has been set up for Baby Honestee through a local church. Donations can be sent to Baby Honestee Fund, Asbury First United Methodist Church, 1050 East Avenue, Rochester, NY 14610.
