Who in Austin/San Antonio sells gaggia or rancillio espresso machines?

Sunday, September 19th, 2010

I can’t find anybody and their websites do not list retailers. All of the upscale retail shops only sell overpriced super-consumerized espresso-like machines (like the Kitchen Aid), and I’m sure that I do not want the Starbucks Barista.

What moderately priced espresso machines are best?

Sunday, September 5th, 2010

So, I am absolutely in love with espresso (oddly, I cant stand the taste of coffee), but I would love to be able to make espresso whenever I please and not have to pay BIG BUCKS for those tiny DoubleShots. Ive been looking into machines and while there are many $100 ones, I was curious if anyone out there has one around $60 and under that works great, what it is and where I can find one….

Please help. This, sadly, would make my week… =p

Where to find good deals on espresso machines?

Sunday, August 15th, 2010

I am looking for a blue or yellow Francis Francis espresso machine. Starbuck’s sells them but they are almost $600 USD.
Does anyone know of an outlet, clearance, or foreign distributor that would sell the product for a better deal?

Find More Enjoyment Because Of The Diversity Of Coffee Machines …

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

Coffee can be enjoyed in many different ways and many different flavors. It would seem that coffee drinkers all have their own preference as to exactly how and when they want their coffee. They all agree that fresh is better. In order to get the freshest coffee possible, it may mean that you prepare it yourself from bean to cup. Read on and discover more enjoyment due to the variety of coffee machines.

Although we see coffee as brown, the beans are actually green before being processed. During roasting, everything about the bean is changed; their color, aroma, etc. You can purchase machines that will allow you to roast fresh coffee beans at home.

When you decide to roast coffee yourself, then you are able to select how it will be roasted. You can roast it as light or as dark as you like. The lighter the roast, the more caffeine and the stronger the taste, while the darker the roast, the smoother it will be.

Now that you have freshly roasted coffee, you may choose to grind it as well. There are many different sized coffee grinders available for home use, and they come in a large variety of styles. You may never be able to drink coffee from a store again.

Try something different if you dare, and go for espresso or cappuccino. You can also make these at home with the proper machine. You will probably never spend the money purchasing a cup of coffee out again. It may taste sinful, however, it actually has less caffeine than a regular cup because of the way that it is brewed.

You have a large selection to choose from when it comes to espresso and cappuccino machines. There are both expensive and inexpensive versions. The newer models will be the most expensive. They use air pressure to force the water onto the coffee and they weigh much less and take up much less room.

You can purchase one of the original espresso machines at a very fair price. It will be a little more work to make the espresso, however, some people actually prefer this type to the more automated way. The like to have more control over the finished product.

Even if you decide that you would like to only stay with regular coffee, there are so many models of machines that you can choose from. It will just depend on if you want your coffee in a hurry, or maybe one cup at a time. However you want your coffee, there is a machine to prepare it, just for you.

Starbucks vs. McDonald's

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

Over my morning coffee (a grande nonfat latte), I read the news this week that a battle is brewing between Starbucks and McDonald’s. According to the story, McDonald’s is planning to capitalize on the public’s willingness to pay $4 for a cup of coffee by hiring baristas and dropping espresso machines in 14,000 of their fast-food outlets. Meanwhile, Starbucks, with business lagging, is fighting back with an “if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em” strategy, by offering heated breakfast sandwiches and adding drive-thru windows to some of their locations.

I’ve always thought of these two chains as polar opposites ? one designed as a sophisticated faux living room where customers could get a decent coffee drink and read their newspapers; the other, a riot of plastic-and-vinyl booths and bright fluorescent lighting where meals are counted in billions served. I wondered if it was really possible for these two worlds to collide. If McDonald’s built its own version of a grande nonfat latte, would Starbucks customers come?

To determine whether Starbucks and McDonald’s customers are the same or different species, I turned to Hitwise data. With the assumption that I’d glean some information about each camp’s patronage by investigating who visited the fast-food chains’ respective websites, I compared their demographics. Here’s what I found. Visitors to Starbucks.com skew female: Starbucks’ website has 8.3% more female visitors than does the McDonald’s site. While McDonalds.com visitors cluster in the 18-to-34 age range, Starbucks owns the 35-to-44-year-old group. There’s also a clear income gap between the two: McDonald’s visitors tend to live in households earning less than $60,000 per year; Starbucks customers lean toward households earning over $60,000.

To add further depth to the profiles, I used Mosaic, a system that divides the U.S. into 50 different behavioral groups, to figure out which segments of our society visit the two websites. I identified the strongest Starbucks and McDonald’s types: For Starbucks, it’s segment B03, the Urban Commuter Family, described as “college-educated households containing dual income couples.” These folks favor golfing as their exercise of choice. The segment that visits McDonald’s is type J03, the Struggling City Centers, described as “lower-income households living in city neighborhoods in the South.”

The interesting point, though, is the difference in demographic trends between each restaurant’s clientele over the last two years. The Big Mac customer base has remained relatively stable, while Starbucks’ coffee-drinkers have diversified. It used to be that Starbucks attracted customers from a small, elite segment of the country; now, its visitors pervade many more segments across America. But, as I finish my latte, I still can’t fully envision the collision of these two worlds. Just imagine one of those annoyingly finicky coffee-orderers requesting a burger just-so at McDonald’s: “I’ll have a grande, extra hot Big Mac with one pump ketchup.” It just doesn’t seem to fit.

Espresso Club – Espresso Machines, Nespresso, Tassimo, Coffe

Monday, July 19th, 2010

In my last post I told you about the Jura booth at the “coffee weekend” show I attended. This time I want to share some photos and impressions about a beautiful showcase of antique and original looking coffee machines by Elektra, La Cimbali, and more. I only took photos of some but you don’t see these every day so enjoy.

Elektra Belle Epoque (1997)

This is just an old world styled espresso machine. Selling for around 11,000 GBP, the Belle Epoque is a machine in a class all of its own, where beauty, functionality and reliability merge together. The brightness of its metal, shaped to a design with the fascination of the past makes an immediate impact and provides a striking finishing touch for elegant, refined premises (excuse me if some of the text is from the website, it just sounds exactly like what I was thinking).

Saeco super-automatic espresso machine.

Planning to swap that old espresso machine for a swankier model? Seattle Coffee Gear wants your business.

The Lynnwood-based equipment and repair shop has launched a program for trading and recycling espresso machines and grinders, something it has done informally for years.

It usually pays $200 to $300 for a trade-in, but has offered up to $500 for a Saeco super-automatic espresso machine that retailed for around $1,000 a few years ago, said president and co-owner Victor Gehlen.

For machines that are too battered to be refurbished and resold, Seattle Coffee Gear will recycle the metal and some plastics, keeping as much as possible out of landfills.

The program is available nationally, with customers shipping their machines to Lynnwood, just like they would for repairs. Details here
