Classic Car News RM Auction Is Antidote To Ferrari Fever

Friday, August 27th, 2010

Autoweek.com is calling it the “feast of Ferrari”, which would indicate the RM auction held in Monaco at the weekend was led by a “stunning line up of rare and classic automobiles” – including a superb collection of Ferraris.

It is no surprise that the auction totalled more than £29 million, with a rare 1962 Ferrari 400 Superamerica Cabriolet Pininfarina AWB going for a record breaking £2.5 million. A number of other classic Ferraris also contributed to the enormous total amount, including a 1962 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta which sold for £2.3 million and a 1957 Ferrari 250 GT LWB Tour de France which sold for £2.1 million and last but by no means least, a 1959 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spyder, which garnered £1.8 million.

“The inaugural Sporting Classics of Monaco auction, held at the Grimaldi Forum on 1st May, saw five automobiles fetch prices in excess of £1.7 million and two new world records”, according to RMAuctions.com. The pinnacle was the 1937 BMW 328 Mille Miglia Bügelfalte, which was sold less than 24 hours after the end of the auction for a confidential figure- having reached a high bid of £3.8 million.

It has been reported that registered bidders from 33 different countries were present at the auction over the telephone, via the internet or in person at its first ever event in Monaco, held in conjunction with the Historic Grand Prix.

RM have reported that “88 of the 105 pre and post war motor cars changed hands to produce an 86% sell-through rate”, making Sporting Classics of Monaco’s debut one of the most successful automobile auctions ever held.

Classic Car News Italian Ferrari In Mint Condition

Sunday, August 22nd, 2010

A classic blue Ferrari is “expected to sell for £1 million” at Bonham’s Auction this weekend in Monaco, according to Metro.co.uk. The blue Tipo 166/195 Inter Cabriolet is one of just 30 custom made models produced, which makes it even more precious to anyone looking to own a piece of classic history.

Although Ferrari had become the dominant force in international sports racing long before the introduction of the 166 model, the Tipo claimed victory in three of the world’s most prestigious events, including Mille Miglia, Targa Florio and Le Mans 24-hour race – making 1949 a phenomenal year for the Tipo cabriolet and Ferrari marque.

The classic Ferrari that’s up for auction this Friday in Monte Carlo could be the “perfect drive for a British owner, because the steering wheel is on the right hand side”, reports Metro.co.uk. If you have a need for speed as well as a love for vintage motors then you’re in for a treat. The two-seater blue classic was turned into a convertible and the 166 engine replaced with a more powerful 195, V12 version.

Philip Kantor of Bonham’s said “all these cars were made to order for those who bought them so they are all completely unique”. So if you’re looking for individuality this classic Ferrari could be just what you’re looking for, with matching orange leather seats and steering wheel.

Bonhams.com has reported that “many Ferrari’s are historically important but few are of greater significance than the Commendatore’s first car built for road use, the Tipo 166 Inter. This superbly presented example warrants special interest and the closest inspection”.

Classic Car News Fake Ferrari Flummoxes Fans

Thursday, August 19th, 2010

The Ferrari 250 GTO is one of the worlds most sought after classic models, with Chris Evans being among the few people fortunate enough to own one. With a hefty price tag of £12 million it’s no surprise they come in short supply, with only 36 exquisite motors ever made.

Ferrari GTO’s have proven to be “serious investment fodder”, according to HonestJohn.co.uk, and are considered to be one of the most beautiful models ever built by Ferrari, and that’s saying something when you look back on the Spider, Testarossa, Daytona, Dino and F40 to name a few.

A 1965 Ferrari 250 GTO is expected to fetch a more affordable hammer price in the region of £240,000, which might seem a lot less than the £12m Mr Evans paid, but that’s because this particular model is a replica. This classic car was purpose built to create an authentic copy of the only right hand drive 4.0 litre, five-speed 250 GTO, built by Ferrari to compete at Le Mans.

To add to the authenticity of this fantastic imitation, a number of “genuine parts were used in the conversion, which took place in 1993, including the steering wheel, dials and wire wheels”, according to uk.cars.yahoo.com.

Like most classic cars the Ferrari replica has been on a long journey, starting with the chassis which was shipped to Italy where it was “shortened and converted to GTO specification, before a handmade aluminium body was painstakingly sculpted and subsequently returned to the UK for fitting by Ferrari experts”, reports HonestJohn.co.uk.

The auction at Brooklands Museum will also be home to another vintage motor which deserves recognition of four decades of greatness, it is of course the Aston Martin DB5, estimated to fetch between £350,000 – £450,000.
