Excitement brewing: the Slayer espresso maker (Image: slayer-espresso.de)

Slayer is coming to Toronto.

No, we’re not talking about the speed metal gods who brought us “Angel of Death,” but a much-hyped and curiously named espresso machine. This is not one of those hammered-copper eagle-headed art pieces from Italy. The $18,000 machine is raising eyebrows because it offers the barista a palette of pressure options to work with, opening the door to all kinds of experimentation with espresso’s tastes and textures.

Fewer than 20 Slayers exist in coffee shops, according to tech site Gizmodo, and we’ll be seeing Toronto’s first and only one at the upcoming Thor Espresso Bar, which is set to open in early September at Bathurst and Niagara. Thor’s Twitter page calls Slayer “the coolest espresso machine on the planet.” A quick googling to determine the veracity of that statement led us to this video of coffee nerds playing around with the machine. Watching it, we think Thor just might be right.

We love espresso coffee. What is the best coffee maker to own? Is it Barista?

I have heard people have issues with Barista. Before I buy one, I wanted other opinions.

Politics With My Cappuccino

Sunday, May 23rd, 2010

My barista leaned over the counter today. “What do you think of the MSNBC host who said she hoped it was a Tea Party member rather than a Muslim who set the car bomb in Times Square?” His colleague at the cappucino maker edged closer to hear what I had to say. “Well,” I replied, “I wish it was someone from the Tea Party. It actually kind of makes me sick to my stomach every time I hear it’s a Muslim because I think the large majority of them aren’t radicalized and it just gets more difficult for law abiding Muslims.” My barista rolled his eyes and got back to work. My barista and I have been sparring politically for a while now. It has become a regular occurrence.

Standby for the great irony here. My youngish, handsome barista who drives a sporty car (he says he married well) is wildly conservative. Not what you’d expect. Consider your barista. Hip? Trendy? Teva Sandals? Mine is a supporter of Sarah Palin and the Tea Party and is sick of all these bailouts. Me? I’m the middle aged suburban mom in an upscale Denver suburb, as liberal as they come, who believes government has a financial obligation to its people and coming to the rescue is necessary now and then. His eyes light up when he sees me come in for my daily nonfat dry cappuccino fix. “Vicky, what do you think of this? Vicky, can’t wait to hear your opinion on this one. Vicky, how are you going to feel when your taxes go up? Vicky, come over here. I need to ask you about something.” Politics is part of my coffee ritual now.

At first I was a bit surprised by his forwardness. I couldn’t imagine our discreet back and forth was good for business or that his company or customers would approve. After a particularly intense exchange, which lasted about five minutes and had his colleagues calling him back to work, I got downright uncomfortable. We were discussing President Obama and Congress and health care reform. He made sure I understood that my taxes were going up and soon my income would be shrinking. I didn’t articulate my position succinctly. Race came up. I walked out of the store replaying the discussion in my head. I talked to my friends about whether I should say something to him or stop visiting. After thinking it through, I came to the conclusion that this exchange is good for both of us, but in measured doses. Kind of like one cup of coffee a day. After all, discussing politics at the local coffee shop is what we do in America. Right?

A while back I was listening to NPR and there was a discussion about Melinda Blau’s book Consequential Strangers

PARKLAND, Wash. — A man dressed in womans underwear and exposing himself drove up to a Parkland espresso stand three times before one of the baristas threw a cup of boiling water at him, said the Pierce County Sheriffs Office.Jamae Feddock, a bikini clad barista at Java Girls, said she first thought the man dressed in womens underwear and exposing himself was a sick joke, until the man came back several times.VIDEO: Man Was Wearing Woman’s Bra, UnderwearVIDEO BACKSTORY: Bikini Baristas Not Only Ones Exposing ThemselvesThe first time he came to the window Feddock said he was wearing a white bra and white panties and touching himself inappropriately. Then he came back a second time.He has underwear over his face, he’s wearing hot pink panties now and the underwear that he was wearing is over his face and there’s a little peephole so he can see, Feddock said.Feddock and another barista were working around 5 a.m. last Thursday when the incident happened. They tried to get a look at the mans license plate, but that too was covered up with womens underwear. When the man came back a third time one of the baristas took a cup of scolding hot water and doused him with it.Kylie opened the door and threw boiling hot water on his face and his chest and he said oooh yeah, Feddock said. Police agencies around Pierce County said they are seeing more and more incidents of indecent exposure — as more coffee stands open — many with women dressed provocatively — or barely dressed at all. I don’t think we can make a quid pro quo there that this is causing the effect, and they certainly don’t deserve that behavior, but we do have some of these stands that have been victimized by these activities, said Det. Sgt. Jerry Bates a Pierce County Sheriffs Deputy.Anyone with information should call the Pierce County Sheriffs Office.

Tiff Over Iced Espresso Spills Into Blogosphere

Friday, April 30th, 2010

Not Jeff Simmermon, whose request for a triple shot of espresso over ice at Murky Coffee in Arlington County turned into a heated Internet squabble, sparked debate about whether the customer is always right and provided a reminder about the intended and unintended consequences of blogging.

The drink request Sunday, said Simmermon, who was visiting from Brooklyn, was denied by a barista who told him that Murky doesn’t do espresso over ice. Irked, Simmermon said he asked for a triple espresso and a cup of ice, which he said the barista provided, grudgingly.

Then — and this is Simmermon’s account — the barista scolded him, saying that what he was doing to his espresso was “not okay” and that the store’s policy was to preserve the integrity of the drink. The employee said that allowing customers to dilute espresso was not in keeping with said policy.

Coffee-rage moment in 3, 2, 1 . . .

Simmermon, 32, said that he interrupted the barista with an angry blast about how he would have his coffee any way he pleased, thank you very much, and that he told the barista he had his own policy about doing what he wants with the products he pays for. He mixed in a couple of expletives, but that was the essence of it.

That might have been the end of the saga, but Simmermon did what comes naturally to literate victims of perceived everyday injustices in the 21st century.

In a post on his Web site, And I Am Not Lying For Real ( http://andiamnotlying.com), Simmermon detailed the encounter, his anger and, somewhat befuddlingly, his order at Murky an hour later for the “strongest iced beverage your policy will allow.” He accepted the barista’s recommendation for an Americano with four shots “and light on the water.” (He said he enjoyed it.)

He also posted a picture of the dollar bill he left as a tip, on which he wrote “[naughty word deleted] you and your precious coffee policy.”

Since coffee shops are little more than way stations and IV drips for many bloggers, it’s not surprising that Simmermon’s post quickly made the rounds in cyberspace. Murky’s owner, Nicholas Cho, was alerted to the dispute and responded with an open letter on the cafe’s Web site ( http://murkycoffee.com). He defended his berated barista, David Flynn, and ticked off a litany of store policies that would have made Seinfeld’s Soup Nazi duck for cover:

What’s a good holiday gift for a barista? (The hardworking, underpaid espresso lady)?

Saturday, April 10th, 2010

I don’t want to spend more than $25. Are there any baristas out there, and what would you like your customers to get you as gifts (besides more tips)?
