The Industrious Historian: Take two Dover's and call me in the …

Indigestion? Nausea? Hypertension? Fever? Headache? Today, you would drive to the local pharmacy for an over-the-counter medication to cure what ails you. However, at the turn-of-the-century, in rural areas like those around Mingus and Thurber, people relied on country doctors. Dr. John T. Spratt travelled far and wide by horse (and later by car) dispensing medication and using his expertise to spread comfort and healing.

Thurber, the largest town between Fort Worth and El Paso, was booming when Dr. Spratt moved to Mingus from Pecos with his family in 1904. Mingus at this time was a quarter of the size of the industrial Thurber. Spratt operated as the only doctor there where he built a drugstore and pharmacy. Despite the proximity of Mingus to Thurber, half of Dr. Spratt’s medical fees were paid to him in goods, according to his son, John S. Dell Laser 1125 Laser Toner – A Solid Way To Help Get Your Home …

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

Imagine a black and white laser printer doing more than just printing documents. Yes, that’s exactly what the Dell Laser 1125 printer using Dell Laser 1125 toner is all about. In a single unit it gives you the functionality of a printer, scanner, fax machine and photocopying machine. And what’s more surprising than that is it comes with a price tag that’s surely within your means.

The solid performance of this 4-in-1 gadget makes it perfect for virtually any small-scale business or industry. And it can fit and look great in practically any available space. Just how compact is this machine? It has a 14.8 inch height, 16.3 inch width, and 17.5 inch depth. Plus it weighs a little over 23 pounds. Considering that it’s capable of doing different tasks, just think of how much of a space-saver this Dell product is.

Printing speed is up to 21 pages per minute (ppm). This speed is based on using a typical letter-sized paper and normal text contents. It will, however, vary depending on media size used. Flexibility wise, A4, A5, A6, B2, custom sizes, executive, legal and letter sizes can be handled. Compatible media types include: bond, xerographic, card stock, transparencies, label sheets, etc.

While being a black and white laser printer, it’s capable of scanning in 24-bit color. It can scan documents with up to 600 x 600 dpi (dots per inch). A 30-sheet automatic document feeder allows for multi-page scanning. As with making reproductions, this machine has a copy speed of up to 21 ppm, again depending on media size.

As a fax machine, it has a transmission speed of up to 33.6 kbps. Unlike other printers with fax functionality, this one is a true stand-alone fax machine. Meaning it can work even without being attached to a computer. This machine also comes built-in with software that automatically alerts you when it’s running low on toner, and it can do so through sending you an e-mail. This comes in handy, especially if you order office consumables online.

The secret to this machine’s operating speed lies in the processor. It’s powerful with its 133 MHz speed and it has a built-in 32 MB memory. While there’s no slot for memory expansion, this one is spacious enough for daily tasks necessitated by a small office. Printing of first page takes around 10 seconds, discounting the warm up time. This unit is compatible with most Windows versions. For support for newer versions, the appropriate software can be easily downloaded at Dell’s official website.

Making it very easy to use is the control panel. An LCD screen and user-friendly interface will guide you regardless of which of the four functions you intend to use. The body is fitted with a USB 2.0 and RJ-11 jack. And to get you started right away with your office printing needs, a toner cartridge comes with the package.

The conveniences alone that the Dell Laser 1125 printer can provide your small office with are a great deal. It can easily match other high-end black and white lasers, sans of course the steep price. Your printing, scanning, faxing and reproducing needs are provided by one compact and stylishly designed unit. Each purchase is also backed by warranty, and access to Dell’s 24/7 technical support, free of charge.

Affordably prices is applicable when it comes to the Dell Laser 1125 laser toner also, when ordering Dell toner online. Competing and usually beating local merchants, online vendors can meet all your toner cartridges needs.

Where can I find pictures of office desk arrangements?

Tuesday, September 28th, 2010

I am going to buy office desk for my office. And I would like to get ideas for my new desk at home. Some people use a modern decor, others use wood themes or plastic trays. I am also looking for homemade bulletin boards and pencil jars. Is there a place to get ideas for my own desk? Thanks!

Gen0Y Queenslanders best for work-life balance

Monday, September 27th, 2010

THE Monday morning grumbles about disappearing weekends have been challenged by research revealing Queenslanders are spending less time in the office than they did a decade ago.

Generation Y is partly responsible for the overall drop in average hours worked.

Under 25s are the only age group spending less than 40 hours a week at their desks, proving they are more adept than older workers at juggling their work-life balance.

A new Bankwest Working Times report, released today, shows Queensland’s 2.3 million workers put in an average of 41.3 hours a week at work over the past year to August.

It adds up to 1.3 hours less in the office a week than 10 years ago, and has handed Queenslanders back the equivalent of nearly nine working days over the course of the year, compared with 2000.

West Australian full-timers are the hardest workers in the nation at 42.2 hours a week, while full-time workers in the ACT put in the shortest hours at 39.2 hours a week.

Bankwest found small business owners worked longer hours, while public servants worked fewer.

Brisbane 24-year-olds Hayley Bourne and Kiri Martin, who both work in radio, said less hours at the desk was a common trend in a modern office.

“It’s changed across the whole spectrum with Blackberries and the like. I’d be there checking emails in the car,” Ms Bourne said.

Bankwest business chief executive Ian Corfield said there was little doubt many Australians were working harder, but the research showed this did not mean we necessarily worked longer.

“The thing to remember, of course, is that for many of us the day doesn’t end when we switch off the computer and go home: many Queenslanders are still working with Blackberries and laptop computers at home at night and over the weekend,” he said. “Even so, our research shows Queenslanders are actually spending 73 hours less in the office every year, which equates to nearly nine working days off compared to 2000.

“Some of this appears due to Gen-Ys who have opted for work-life balance at an age when people traditionally worked long hours to try to get ahead and establish their careers.”

Mr Corfield said many workplaces were embracing flexible arrangements, but the challenge was to embrace new technologies without it intruding on our lives.

Planning for RV Days with Jessica and Harry: Quite the Staple Remover

Sunday, September 26th, 2010

Yesterday’s main event was a trip to the Surgical Services Office at Albany Medical Center to have my staples removed. The morning was uneventful. I rested up, and took my shower earlier than I have been this past few days. Harry came home from work at noon, and at 1 pm we headed out. Sure do feel bumps on the road more acutely these days, although at least that has subsided a bit since my trip home on Saturday. We were lucky to find a spot in the parking garage on the roof. It seemed like the last one, although the machine downstairs was still letting cars in, so maybe we missed one on the way up. I am so glad that I have spent the past 6 months getting into better shape, because I can’t imagine how little stamina I would have if I had been in March’s shape when this all happened. It wasn’t that far from the parking spot to the elevator, and we walked very slowly, but I was sweating like I’d just had a huge workout. We checked into the office, and after a short wait, my name was called. Then it was time to sit in the little room – I have never understood why the wait is always the longest once you actually make it to this point. It’s like they’ve done their part by getting you into someplace private within 5 minutes of your appointment time, but then you wait 30 minutes in the next room for the doctor to make an appearance. Anyway, after the obligatory wait, the doctor appeared and he was great. Answered questions, took his time with his explanations AND took out the staples!!! He had this handy dandy little tool that went right under the cross piece and just crimped it, and those little spokes just came right out. So nice and easy, and I hardly felt it.
