The big staple: Tiny city of skyscrapers built out of office stationery

Gleaming silver skyscrapers dominate the skyline of this city – but this impressive metropolis is made of tiny stacks of staples.

Artist Peter Root created his urban sprawl by carefully placing 100,000 pieces of the tiny office stationery in building-like stacks.

The stacks of staples, some up to five inches high, look from a distance just like skyscrapers

Called Ephemicropolis, it took him 40 hours to make the 20ft by 10ft work on the floor of Northern Trust atrium in Guernsey.

The part-time lecturer broke the stacks into sizes varying from full stacks of about five inches high down to single staples. And, unsurprisingly, having a steady hand was important.

The 20ft by 10ft staple city, called Ephemicropolis, took artist Peter Root 40 hours to make

‘As the stacks are free-standing and very close together, the obvious challenge was not to knock them over,’ says Peter.

‘Tobuild the more dense sections of the work took several hours and, on acouple of occasions, gravity demonstrated its severe lack of sympathyby undoing this work in milliseconds.’

The staples are packed tightly together, with the slightest touch leading to possible disaster for Peter

Its not that hard to stand staples up like that. Thats how they come when you take them out of the box. Sort of looks like the top of my desk when I get bored. I also clip paperclips together just for fun…is that art too?

Mr. Ploppy, Pattaya City, Royal Kingdom of Thailand Yes you are correct, they are staples and not clips, but then staples do clip paper together, therefor they are a type of clip.

Rumored 'Castlevania' Multiplayer Game Rated In Australia

Saturday, May 29th, 2010

The question of when a game like “Castlevania: Harmony of Despair” truly transcends being a rumor and becomes a real game is one that philosophers can debate long into the future, but Australia’s ratings board has posted a listing for the title and marked it for an Xbox release, so it may be fair to assume the multiplayer project does exist.

Konami’s unannounced game received an M rating for “fantasy violence,” according to the Office of Film and Literature Classification (OFLC), which dated its decision on May 27, according to Classification.gov.au.

Last year at E3, Konami unveiled “Castlevania: Lords of Shadow,” and it’s entirely plausible that “Harmony of Despair” may be next in line when the industry show kicks off in June.

A poster on NeoGAF in April claimed that the new Castlevania game would appear for Xbox Live Arcade and come loaded with HD graphics and six-player adventuring. That, of course, is not nearly as reliable a source as the government-run Australian page, but the new rating does seem to corroborate this game’s existence.

Watch Konami’s promotional ventures during E3, though, and I’m sure you’ll learn more.

Would you try out a 6-way multiplayer Castlevania game? Do you think Konami will talk about this at E3? Share your reactions in the comment section below.

ESE pods for Espresso capable of only making short shots?

Saturday, May 29th, 2010

I have a Breville 800 Espresso machine, and when I use ground beans the water will flow out at a steady stream and I can make a short or long shot easily. However I just started using some ESE pods with the machine, and instead of a steady stream the water drips out and will only make a small shot. No matter how long I leave the maching running, no more espresso will come out of the filter holder. Is this normal?

Also yes I made sure I was using the correct filter labeled “pod”. Thanks for any help.
Not that I want a longer shot, it just sounds like the machine is really stressing to make the shot and I want to make sure im not doing any damage and that what im experiencing is normal operation with ESE pods.

Composite Cables – The Wii Killer

Saturday, May 29th, 2010

Friday, IGN’s San Francisco office was abuzz with the arrival of the Wii. Thousands of IGN employees gathered around Craig Harris’ desk for a glimpse of Nintendo’s new console. When Craig finally got around to actually putting in a disc, the collected masses collectively vomited.

Legend of Zelda on an LCD with composite cables is FUGLY. Really FUGLY. So FUGLY it deserves all caps. The same can be said for Excite Truck and likely any other Wii game. If you have an HDTV, the Wii may turn your stomach. There are two solutions.

#1: Get component cables. Easier said than done, as rumors suggest you can only get these online and that quantities will be far more limited than the four million Wii’s shipping his holiday. Why Nintendo wanted their games to look like shit for millions is unknown. But if you stick with the in-the-box composite cables, you will likely be unhappy with what appears on screen.

#2: Buy a shitty TV. No, seriously. With composite cables, Wii games will look a lot better on a standard definition television. Especially one that is under 32”. I may actually spend $250 at launch to buy a lesser TV just for the Wii. It sounds crazy, but if you saw the horror on screen that IGN witnessed Friday, you wouldn’t scoff at the idea of a Wii-dedicated shit TV.

My excitement for the Wii has just dropped by about 20%. That’s still better than the PS3, which, after seeing in the office the past week, is now below “Root Canal” among things I’d like to have for Christmas. I still want a Wii, but for the first time in six months, I’d actually be okay if I missed out at launch. Also, the first two hours of Zelda = Zzzzzz…

Officer leaves loaded gun in London Starbucks toilet

Saturday, May 29th, 2010

One of Tony Blair’s former protection officers has been suspended from her job after she accidentally left a loaded Glock 17 semi-automatic pistol in the toilet of a Starbucks coffee shop in Central London.

The authorised firearms officer, believed to be a member of the SO1 special protection unit, visited the toilet in a branch of Starbucks on Edgware Road last Friday. She re-emerged and continued her shift unaware that she had left the deadly weapon in the bathroom.

The gun was discovered by a member of the public who immediately dialled 999, Scotland Yard admitted today after a report in the Sun newspaper. The officer involved did not alert her superiors, a spokeswoman said, and the gun was not identified as hers until its serial number was compared to those logged at a police armoury.

The female officer, who has not been identified, is now being investigated by the Directorate of Professional Standards, Scotland Yard’s internal disciplinary body.

A police spokesman said today: “We do not know how long the investigation will last. It must be clear whether the person was negligent or not – because their career is on the line.”

The officer involved, who was once Tony Blair’s close protection officer, is thought to be a high-flying female officer in her 30s.

Scotland Yard said today that the gun had not been fired. “A police-issue firearm was left unattended in a central London cafe on August 29 and was found by a member of the public,” a spokesman said.

“The weapon belongs to a Metropolitan Police authorised firearms officer who was on duty at the time. The officer has been removed from operational duties while an investigation is carried out.”

The Metropolitan Police employs 2,586 authorised firearms officers.
