Students 'Stand And Deliver' For Former Teacher

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

MICHELE NORRIS, host:

Back in the late ’80s, a dedicated high school teacher in East Los Angeles inspired a hit movie. “Stand and Deliver” was the story of Jaime Escalante, who convinced his students they could do anything with a good education.

Recently, Escalante’s family revealed that he’s dying of cancer and that he’s run out of money. So now, the teacher’s many admirers are standing up and delivering for him.

NPR’s Karen Grigsby Bates reports.

Unidentified Man #1: Come on, move on.

(Soundbite of applause)

KAREN GRIGSBY BATES: The light drizzle on a recent afternoon didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of Garfield’s cheerleaders.

Unidentified Group: G-A-R-F-I-E-L-D…

BATES: They shook their pompoms on the street in front of Garfield High and encouraged passersby and drivers to drop donations in buckets held by students dressed as bulldogs, their school’s mascot.

Unidentified Group: (Unintelligible).

Unidentified Woman #1: That’s Ms. Escalante.

BATES: From the early ’80s through 1991, Bolivian-born Jaime Escalante successfully taught calculus and other advanced math classes at Garfield to Latino kids who were routinely written off by society. Mark Baca says, by teaching students like him the rigorous discipline…

Mr. MARK BACA: He changed the minds of people all over the world about barrio kids.

(Soundbite of music)

Mr. BACA: But we love Kimo because he was our mentor, he was our teacher, he was our friend, and he motivated us to believe in ourselves.

BATES: And the barrio kids who mastered algebra, geometry, trigonometry and calculus under Escalante have come back to show their gratitude.

Lawyer Araceli Lerma reels off a partial list of schools that accepted Escalante’s students from her 1991 graduating class.

Ms. ARACELI LERMA (Attorney): My classmates, folks went to Harvard, Stanford, Dartmouth, MIT…

Unidentified Woman #2: Wellesley.

Unidentified Woman #3: Wellesley.

BATES: Escalante’s story was immortalized in the motion picture “Stand and Deliver.” Edward James Olmos earned an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of Escalante, and the two have remained close ever since.

Now, Olmos is spearheading the effort to help his friend in the final stages of Escalante’s illness. Olmos says it’s the least they can do for the teacher his kids affectionately nicknamed Kimo, short for kemosabe, he who knows.

Mr. EDWARD JAMES OLMOS (Actor): To say thank you to someone while they’re alive is the best way of communicating your love for them.

BATES: What Kimo did for his kids, Olmos says, is hard for people who don’t come from here to fully appreciate.

Mr. OLMOS: He started off in a very small inner city school, showed the entire country that these kids that were from intensely difficult environments were capable of handling what he called the great equalizer, which was mathematics.

BATES: Math, Escalante believes, is the portal to understanding almost everything else. If you can figure out the patterns, the logic of math, you can do anything.

Lawyer Sandra Munoz says Kimo ignored labels and classifications like gifted and honors.

Ms. SANDRA MUNOZ (Attorney): The thing about Mr. Escalante is he didn’t care whether or not you were designated in the gifted and talented program. He gave opportunities to everybody.

BATES: And as this clip from “Stand and Deliver” shows, he expected them to work for it, even when other kids got time off.

(Soundbite of film, “Stand and Deliver”)

Unidentified Man #2 (Actor): (As character) Saturdays? We’ve got to come on Saturdays, too? And no vacation?

Mr. OLMOS: (As Jaime Escalante) Yup, pass the AP exam and you get college credit.

BATES: What it took was ganas, the desire, the will to do the work.

In a comfortable house in the town of Whittier, classmates Dolores Arredondo and Alicia Barrera are leafing through their Garfield yearbook.

Unidentified Woman #4: It’s embarrassing, right? All that hair in the ’80s.

BATES: Barrera reads Escalante’s inscription.

Ms. ALICIA BARRERA: Remember you are the best, love Jaime, stand and deliver.

BATES: Barrera says that was Kimo’s mantra to his students: Work hard, then work harder. You can do this because you are the best, which doesn’t mean it’ll be simple, he told their class when he spoke at their 1991 graduation.

Mr. JAIME ESCALANTE: You must be ready to work harder than you ever worked before.

Ms. BARRERA: And once we went to college, math wasn’t as hard. You know, we were – you know, most of the classes weren’t as bad as because they didn’t require as much as what he had required from us.

BATES: Barrera’s classmate, Dolores Arredondo, is vice president at one of California’s largest banks. She becomes visibly emotional about Escalante’s legacy.

Ms. DOLORES ARREDONDO: He brought so much pride to the school, to the neighborhood. He even, I think, elevated the standards that other teachers had for themselves.

BATES: She’s eager to help the man who she says changed their lives.

Ms. ARREDONDO: That’s why I think we all feel this sense of responsibility not just to him but to his family because they shared him with us, and now we got to give back to them.

BATES: And they will. Escalante’s former students have the ganas to see that their beloved mentor gets the support he needs.

The Real Meaning of Easter? | internetmonk.com

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

March 30, 2010 by Chaplain Mike

By Chaplain Mike.

According to Rick Warren, Easter is about “growing your church.” He exhorts pastors in a recent Christian Post article to “use Easter” to break growth barriers in their congregations.

Easter, a means to an end.

A prime marketing opportunity for the real business of evangelicalism: church growth.

  • Not worship.
  • Not celebrating and praising the risen Christ for his sake.
  • Not coming together as the family of God to confess our resurrection faith.
  • Not witnessing the baptisms of those who have died to sin and been raised to walk in newness of life.
  • Not hearing the Good News of God’s in-breaking kingdom proclaimed for the joy and assurance of his people.
  • Not an opportunity for the pastor to instruct the congregation with Biblical perspective and theological depth on the meaning and significance of the finished work of Christ, which defeated sin, death, and evil forever.
  • Not partaking of the wine and bread and experiencing the presence of the living Christ in our midst.
  • Not introducing a new season of the Church Year—the Great 50 Days of Easter—when we learn together how walk with Jesus in newness of life.
  • Not being sent forth into the world to be resurrection people with a resurrection message in a world longing for life.

No, pastor, according to Warren, Easter is a day to be “leveraged” so you can have a bigger church!

Here’s his counsel:

Leverage the day. Make sure you’re putting your best foot forward that weekend. Promote Easter as much as possible and then make sure you’re ready for the people when they come.

Also, give people something for their heart, for their head, and for their hand. Give them inspiring music for their heart. Give them a practical message for their head. And you put something in their hand they can take home.

Finally, start a series at Easter. This will encourage your Easter guests to come back the next week because they want to hear what’s next in the series. Pick something that connects with your community. You know what they’re dealing with. Tell them what the Bible says about it and provide practical help.

This Easter can be huge for your church. It can be just what you need to take your church to the next level.

Not one word about Jesus.

The greatest day in the Christian year, the greatest event in history has become an opportunity for a “practical message” that will pack ‘em in and keep ‘em coming back and help you overcome a dreaded “attendance barrier.”

If this doesn’t represent everything that is wrong with American evangelicalism, what does?

LHC Achieves Collisions At 7 TeV

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

Posted on: Tuesday, 30 March 2010, 08:05 CDT

Officials at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) have successfully achieved a collision at 7 trillion electron volts (TeV), the latest milestone in their search for Higgs boson — also known as the “God Particle” — as they attempt to reach levels in their Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

CERN spokeswoman Paola Catapano called it “physics in the making” and “the beginning of a new era,” and according to the AFP, “Cheers erupted in separate control rooms around the 27-kilometre (16.8-mile) long Large Hadron Collider (LHC) as the detectors recorded the collisions of beams of sub-atomic particles at close to the speed of light.”

Early Tuesday morning, CERN researchers at their Geneva-based facility fired up the LHC as they began their successful attempt to cause particle collisions to occur at a level close to the speed of light. Their ultimate mission is to generate a small-scale, artificial “Big Bang” that will provide insight as to how the universe was formed.

Previously, they had established the beam record at 3.5 TeV.

“We are opening the door to New Physics, to a new period of discovery in the history of humankind,” CERN director-general told Robert Evens of Reuters on Monday. At that time, Evans notes that it might be “hours or even days before the first collisions happen.”

Scientists in the LHC facility, as well as those watching the proceeding from afar, did not have to wait as long as some had anticipated, however. Following a short delay due to power supply and magnet safety system glitches, the high powered collisions were being reported shortly after 7am Central time.

The next steps involve trying to prove the existence of the Higgs boson, as well as find evidence and discern the properties of dark matter and dark energy — discoveries which could have a profound effect on modern-day theoretical physics.

“I can’t think of anything more important for us theorists right now,” University of Manchester physicist Jeff Forshaw told The Guardian on Monday. “It’s easy to dream up theories, but it’s very, very difficult to dream up theories that are right. The LHC will help us weed out the ones that are wrong.”

“There is a whole (program) of research that builds up to something like the discovery of the Higgs particle and that (program) starts now,” he added. “It has got to work, and I would bet an enormous amount of money that it will find something new.”

How many rounds of encryption are performed by ssltls?

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

I was wondering how many rounds of encryption are performed by ssl or tls after the key exchange. Precisely, how many rounds for a 256 bit AES HTTPS connection?
Thank you for your answer Pappy, but that link does not answer the question. =(
I know the general details of the ssl process, I need to know how many rounds of 256 bit encryption are performed. That article does not address that.

HITS & MISSES – WRESTLEMANIA 26: Taker vs. Michaels, Cena vs. Batista, 7 …

3/28 WWE WrestleMania 26 PPV Hits & Misses

WWE PPV HITS
]]>

Randy Orton vs. Cody Rhodes vs. Ted DiBiase: This was the start of a trend to the evening where the in-ring action was good but the booking was sub-par or vice versa. However, this one still ends up on the “hit” side of things. The match had a nice flow to it and was a good regroup type of match after the weak opener (more on that later). I’m not sure who Rhodes’s tailor is, but he/she should be fired! That aside, this was a solid match. I don’t necessarily agree with Orton going over here, but there were no real complaints about their in-ring work. I’m sure this feud has one more match to it before the three members of Legacy officially go their own ways. But, I’m also hoping to see Rhodes sell Orton’s “punt” to the head for about at least a month, as has been the precedent.
]]>Jack Swagger wins the Money in the Bank Ladder match: This had to be the big shocker of WM. First of all, the match was what most people thought it was going to be – a spot fest. I’ve been a fan of the match concept since it arrived. However, I’d like to see WWE scale this match back to six wrestlers. Ten wrestlers is WAY too many and I think that was apparent with this year’s showing. My top three going into this match were Christian, Kofi Kingston, and Drew McIntyre, so having Jack Swagger walk out with the briefcase was a major surprise…but a good one. I’ve always liked Swagger and I hope that this means that he’ll now get the push that he deserves. Some of the spots (including Swagger pulling down the briefcase) took too long to set up but it didn’t take too much away from the match. I am expecting to see a quick cash-in (I thought for sure we were getting one after the Edge-Jericho match) this year. With the Money in the Bank PPV coming in July (and assuming that Raw and Smackdown will each have a winner), I don’t believe that WWE will want to have three guys running around with a briefcase guaranteeing a title shot.
]]>Triple H vs. Sheamus: This match falls into the aforementioned category of “good action/sub-par booking,” like the triple threat match. I was actually pleasantly surprised by this match as far as the in-ring work went. But, I still can’t believe that Triple H was booked to win over Sheamus. I’m assuming that this feud also has another one-to-two matches in it and that we’ll see it continue. This match review seems short, but there really isn’t much too much to say about it!
]]>Edge vs. Chris Jericho (World Heavyweight Title): It certainly didn’t live up to my big expectations, but it was solid from start to the post-match finish. The flow to this match was perfect; starting off slow and slowly gained momentum. I think what was apparent, however, is that Edge isn’t 100 percent yet. The match was booked properly (to ensure that Edge will keep chasing Jericho) and to give Edge more time to keep rehabbing his Achilles tendon injury. The post-match spear through the barricade at ringside was a nice spot, as well. At this point, I was waiting and waiting and then surprised that Jack Swagger didn’t cash in his briefcase for a title shot. All in all, though, a solid match and it was nice to finally see Chris Jericho get a major win at WM – a win that had eluded him until now.
]]>John Cena vs. Batista (WWE Title): This match was a “hit”…barely! It also fell into the category of “decent action/sub-par booking.” You had to know coming into this match that the wrestlers weren’t going to set the world on fire with in-ring work. I think most people would have liked to see Cena continue to chase Batista, as Batista is currently doing the best work of his entire career. I must admit, I didn’t think he could pull off a strong heel character and I was proven wrong. With this match not going on last, WWE could have afforded to go with two heel champions going over and I think that’s the way it should have gone. But, again, these two put on probably the best match that they’re going to put on together and I can’t give them a miss for that.
]]>Shawn Michaels vs. The Undertaker (Shawns career vs. Undertaker’s undefeated WM record): Did this match top last year’s? In terms of in-ring work…no, but barely. In terms of drama and story telling…absolutely! The nearfalls were done very well and I did, in fact, start to believe that Shawn was going to win. Shawn’s moonsault off the top rope onto the announcer’s table outside the ring was unreal. The idea that Shawn was working The Undertaker’s leg since the beginning of the match helped build the belief that Shawn could win because of Undertaker’s “injury.” Once we got to the finish, though, it was apparent that Shawn was not going to win. I loved seeing Undertaker actually say “what do I have to do?” after multiple false finishes. It “humanized” him in a way that I think we haven’t seen done since his return to the “Deadman” persona. Finally, seeing Shawn pull himself up Undertaker’s body and look into his eyes, only to slap him, instantly reminded me of Ric Flair almost telling Shawn to end it like he did at WM 24. In a way, it showed that Shawn knew, at that point, that he couldn’t win and wanted The Undertaker to end it. If this really is the end to HBK’s career, I want to say right here and now, thank you Shawn for a great career and countless classics that we, as wrestling fans, will never forget. I’m hoping that Shawn will get the same type of send-off on Raw that we saw WWE give Ric Flair after WrestleMania 24.

WWE PPV MISSES
]]>

John Morrison/R-Truth vs. ShowMiz (Unified Tag Titles): For all the decent promotion that was put into this match, I was very disappointed. It went less than five minutes and came off as the throwaway match that many of thought it would be when Morrison/Truth first earned the title shot. Why put promotion into a match and then only give these guys less than five minutes to work? Not to mention, it was a weak way to start off the biggest wrestling show on the year. This was a match that was booked correctly, as far as a finish goes, but wasn’t given nearly enough time to shine or get the crowd into the show. I never thought that ShowMiz was going to lose to begin with, but the fact that there was no real drama to this match to challenge that really makes this match a major “miss.” Here’s hoping that this is also the end of the thrown-together tag team of Morrison and Truth. Their interviews don’t mesh well together and it’s been uncomfortable to watch because of it.
]]>Rey Mysterio vs. CM Punk: I called Swagger winning the MITB match the biggest shocker of the night. This was a close second and not for good reason. Mysterio and Punk are arguably two of the best wrestlers in the company were given less than seven minutes to work with. That’s only the first part of my gripe. I think the booking of this match was not the right decision. The way to go with this was that after Rey was forced to join Punk’s Straight Edge Society, Punk would want Rey to unmask, to which Rey would refuse. Of course, from there we would get a very captivating Mask vs. Hair feud with Punk eventually losing his hair. Now, I’m not saying that we won’t eventually get there, but I guess it won’t exactly go that way. This was one of the two major disappointments coming from a show that had a stacked card and I still shake my head over and over about my first point…seven minutes!
]]>Bret Hart vs. Vince McMahon: Probably no one had Vince McMahon winning this match in their predictions. However, the lack of drama to this match was disheartening to say the least. Usually, it is the babyface of the match that is at a disadvantage. Vince bringing out Bret’s family, including The Hart Dynasty, to ringside as lumberjacks and Bret’s brother Bruce as a special referee was a good start. However, the double cross should have taken place later in the match and not from the start. It would have made so much more sense to see the Hart’s side with Bret after the match had started and not been announced beforehand. This was definitely the longest eleven minutes of the show because there was no real drama to it. As I said, we all pretty much knew that Bret would go over in this match, but adding a little drama would have been nice. I do see some potentially good things coming out of this though, but more on that later.

10 Divas Tag Match: If you saw WM, then I don’t really need to say anything. If you didn’t, then be glad that you missed this match. This was five minutes of torture and no one should have to watch this. The only thing that was bright to come out of this was seeing Vickie Guerrero pay homage to her late husband Eddie from the top rope.

Michael Cole: “WrestleMania moment.” “Vintage.” If I hear those words/phrases one more time, my head might explode. You could have made a drinking game out of “WrestleMania moment” and would have been hammered by the third match! Michael Cole is obviously not Jim Ross, but I really wish Vince McMahon would give Todd Grisham a chance to shine with Jerry Lawler and Matt Striker in the three-man booths on PPV. Nothing personal against Michael, but I’m just not a fan of his work and have not been for quite some time now.

ANALYSIS/OVERALL GRADE

Did WM 26 live up to my expectations? Not quite, but I also had very high expectations for this show. Do I think it was the best WM since WM XIX, as I thought it would be? Probably. Despite the fact that there was only one more “hit” than there were “misses,” I’d give the show an “A-minus.” The reason is that I think the “hits” were weighted higher than the “misses.” Overall, it was a fun show with a bitter-sweet ending. Either way I think most fans would say it was going to be bitter-sweet despite the winner of Undertaker-Michaels. We would have either seen the end of Undertaker’s undefeated streak or the (potential) end of HBK’s career. As I stated earlier, I hope that HBK gets the same send-off that Flair did two years ago.

As for the other potential fall out, I believe that we’ll see a lot of re-matches at next months “Extreme Rules” PPV. That typically is what has happened the month after WM for the past decade or so. Most of the big feuds that were built up the past few months will officially start to wind down. The annual WWE Draft is also upcoming with some potential major shake-ups. I also wouldn’t be surprised to see Jack Swagger cash in his briefcase as early as this week. I won’t get too in-depth about where I believe WWE is going to go from here because of the aforementioned potential re-matches coming up and the shake up from the draft. For me to make that many predictions would purely speculative considering the upcoming month’s events.

The only one that I will make from here is what I mentioned at the end of my comments on the Bret vs. Vince “miss.” I’ve heard rumblings that Bret is happy with WWE right now and might be willing to extend his short-term contract. That would be great to see. Also potentially coming out of that will be the emergence of The Hart Dynasty. We can assume that Vince will now try to punish the group for double-crossing him at WM, vaulting them into some major storylines. I’d also love to see Bret take leadership of the trio and/or potentially add a fourth addition in Teddy Hart. I know that Teddy has past issues with WWE, but you’d have to think that if anyone could help straighten him out, it would be some firsthand mentoring from Bret. Here’s hoping that this does come to fruition.

The last thing I will touch on is some hopefuls for the WWE Draft. I still really believe that Christian belongs on Smackdown, not Raw. He would fit in perfectly on the blue side with Jericho and Edge. That is, of course, unless there is a major shakeup that brings them to him. If things stay fairly the same, then I’m hoping that Batista stays on Raw. He has been great as a heel and Raw is in a major need for them right now. No matter what though, the draft always is an exciting show each year. With that and the Extreme Rules PPV coinciding with my one-year anniversary writing for The Torch, April should be a pretty exciting month for WWE and pro wrestling in general!

New Godzilla Movie Will Reboot Franchise — Again

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

Godzilla is coming back. Legendary Pictures, which partnered with Warner Bros. on The Dark Knight, 300 and The Hangover, announced Monday that it will produce yet another monster movie based on Japan’s famous mutant.

Since 1954, the Toho Company’s Godzilla franchise has spawned 28 movies, including 2012 director Roland Emmerich’s notorious 1998 adaptation.

Hideyuki Takai, president of Toho, said in a release: “We are anxious to find out where Godzilla’s new stomping will take us.”

Who should be in charge of the stompage? Aiming for a 2012 release, Legendary plans to pick a director shortly.

Transformers auteur Michael Bay and Terminator resuscitator McG come to mind. But should Godzilla, named after the Japanese terms for “gorilla” and “whale,” even be reinvented for the 21st century? Weigh in below.

3/28 WWE WrestleMania 26 Reax

Julian Mazur, Retail manager: That was the best WWE could manage for the greatest PPV of the year? I’d say I’m disappointed, but I’ve come to expect that from WWE of late. The whole performance felt like Raw. Ignoring the HBK-Taker match, the best match went to Batista-Cena (not best result). There weren’t any mistakes I noticed and even though I expected a long, drawn out botch-a-mania, the match flowed well, didn’t drag out, and was actually interesting to watch. I got a laugh out of all the Cena hate, particularly the six guys with ‘We Hate Cena’ shirts. John posing with them at the end put a nice human touch onto it, kind of like John saying ‘I know most people over 12-years-old can’t stand me, but I’m doing a job.’ I think worst match easily goes to Hart vs. McMahon. Y2J vs. Edge and Punk vs. Rey were massive letdowns. All technical, gifted, fast wrestlers and their matches seemed like they were scripted badly so it didn’t outshine other matches. They had their moments, but definitely not at a WrestleMania level. Triple H vs. Sheamus was a match that should have been on Raw as well as Orton vs. Legacy. Hopefully both those angles are over now and WWE will move on. Taker vs. HBK was good. I don’t think it was a fitting send-off for one of the best in the business, but obviously Shawn agreed to it, so who am I to judge? Both guys tried really hard to put on a good match and I think they succeeded. It wasn’t great, but it was good.

Matt G. of SLC, Utah (7.5): Best Match: Michaels vs. Undertaker. Worst Match: Divas Tag match. After reading all the interviews leading up to Mania, I wasn’t shocked by the outcome of Michaels-Taker, but that doesn’t mean I feel great as a wrestling fan with the outcome. Of course, this is pro wrestling and Michaels may not be “retired,” but what if he is? Wrestling fans throughout the world should be in mourning with the loss of truly one of the greatest performers of all time. Michaels was the heart and soul of the WWE for the past 20 years and he is someone I’ve followed since I was a kid. I have mixed feelings about WWE’s future without one of its veteran anchors. The art of in-ring storytelling is quickly becoming lost in the new WWE. I hope this isn’t goodbye for good.

Kenny B. of Kokomo, Ind. (8.0): Best Match: HBK-Undertaker. Worst Match: Divas match. This was my first PPV purchase, simply because I have been a fan of Shawn Michaels my entire life. If this truly was HBK’s last match, it deserved to be the main event on the stage that is synonymous with Shawn Michaels. My friends and I were yelling at the TV when Undertaker teased the suicide dive, remembering last year’s scare. I was shocked that Shawn hit the moonsault, even if it was a little off. Even if the match couldn’t compete with last year’s in a technical sense, it was still a success in keeping me (and my friends who NEVER watch wrestling) on the edge of my seat. As far as the other matches, I felt like I was watching just any other PPV. I will give credit to Cena-Batista, which surprised me since I went into that with very low expectations. I still can’t stand Michael Cole’s announcing. Without JR there to add to the excitement, and the short time allotted to many of the other matches, everything else just fell flat.

Mike Carrier of Anchorage, Alaska (8.0): Best Match: Career vs. The Streak. Worst Match – Anytime the women wrestle. The opening tag team match was ok, but R-Truth & Morrison do NOT make a great tag team. The spot with Morrison hitting the enziguiri on Big Show from the turnbuckle was cool, however. Morrison needs to stay a singles wrestler, though. Orton vs. Legacy was just okay, but I didn’t get the sense it ever got out of first gear. MITB was cool and I liked the innovative spot with Kofi using the broken ladders to walk across the ring. Funny. Swagger winning was surprising, but deserved. Triple H vs. Sheamus was incredible. Sheamus deserved to be at WrestleMania this year and he put on his best performance yet. Punk vs. Mysterio had the feel good match of the night and I thoroughly enjoyed that. Hart vs. McMahon was disturbing. The last minute storyline switch at the beginning with the Hart Family swerve didn’t add anything. The fans weren’t into it either. Too bad, it could’ve been much better. Cena vs. Batista was one of the better matches on the PPV, with the crowd reactions making the match that much better. Shawn Michaels vs. Undertaker was by far the best match of the night. It was too bad to see Shawn retire, but the ending was great with Undertaker offering his respect, and Shawn soaking in the fans’s cheers and respect. Let’s hope they give Shawn a great send off on Raw tonight.

Lee Beatty of St. Louis, Mo.: Best Match: Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels. Worst Match: Sad Divas. Honorable Mention: WWE’s website practically giving away the result of the “Big Match” by announcing that Michaels was “at peace” and “comfortable” with retirement. As far as WrestleManias go, this was up there with some of the best. For any longtime WWE fan, they should know that not every match is going to be five stars, but the wrestlers and WWE in general do their best to make the night special. I am pleased that “all the right people” won tonight. I was hoping to see more out of the Divas, but with “only” four hours to operate, you get what you got. Maryse vs. Beth Phoenix would be interesting as a “next step” in women’s wrestling, but I honestly am less than pleased with Maryse in the ring. Going against the grain, I actually like Ms. “Excuse Me!” Vickie Guerrero. I was happy to see her get a moment. I have much respect for those that endure weeks of humiliation without complaint. … R-Truth and John Morrison, The Brothers Bromance, are a potentially great team, but they aren’t ready just yet. Orton and Legacy should be free of each other now, so we’ll see where they head. I suspect the odd man out may be Cody “How Come I Don’t Have A Movie?” Rhodes. Thankfully, Rey Mysterio won, as we’ve seen the unwilling employee/slave angle too many times. Chris Jericho had his hand raised, but we all know that Edge will wear gold very soon. Money In The Bank? I thought it was Shelton Benjamin’s year, but I actually like Jack Swagger, so this could get really interesting in a hurry. Sheamus did not disgrace himself in losing, and we know he’ll be back for a championship match soon. Hart vs. McMahon was “predictable,” although it was a decent match. The Hart Dynasty was a surprise. I hope their “punishment” will be a run after the Undisputed tag titles against MizShow. Undertaker vs. Michaels? That was another great match, one that should be seen several times to truly appreciate what the “old guys” bought to the table. Every wrestler that wants to perform on the big stage and have a Memorex moment should what these gents two WrestleMania matches. And finally, why does everyone rag on Michael Cole? Maybe he’s not Jim Ross, but who else qualifies? He and Lawler did a commendable job last night, not perfect, but they held their own. In closing, I just ask that Michaels stays retired and (please!) not end up on the “retread” pile in TNA.
